Why Soft Furnishings Define a Completed Interior

Soft furnishings are the element most often under-specified in a luxury interior — and the one that most immediately communicates quality, or the lack of it, to anyone who enters the room. Curtains that hang badly, cushions that lose their shape after a monsoon, upholstery that pills within a year of use, or bedding that fades in Mumbai’s intense sunlight: these are the details that define whether a completed interior holds its quality over time.

At FCI India, soft furnishings are not an afterthought. Our soft furnishings programme operates from the same design brief as the interior project — fabrics are selected in relation to the furniture, wall colours, and lighting rather than chosen independently from sample books after the fact. Every piece is made to measure in our workshop, using fabrics sourced directly from European mills.

This integration matters particularly in Mumbai, where the combination of intense UV from the west, high humidity for four months of the year, and aggressive air conditioning creates a challenging environment for textiles. Our fabric specifications account for all three stressors — we do not specify beautiful European fabrics that will fade, mould, or deteriorate within two years in a Mumbai context.

Material Intelligence

Fabric Selection for Mumbai’s Climate

The Mumbai environment subjects soft furnishings to stresses that are not present in more temperate cities. West-facing rooms receive direct sunlight at intensities that fade standard fabrics in 12–18 months. The four-month monsoon season creates conditions where anti-mould treatments on upholstery backing fabrics are not optional. Air conditioning cycles between 18°C and the ambient 35°C cause constant expansion and contraction in natural fibres, accelerating wear. Our fabric specifications account for all of these factors.

For Sea-Facing & West-Facing Rooms

Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics (Sunbrella and equivalent) are specified for any application receiving direct sunlight — solution-dyeing means the colour goes through the full yarn cross-section, not just the surface, so fading is dramatically reduced. For curtains on west-facing windows, we use a UV-stable lining fabric between the decorative face fabric and the room — this extends the life of the face fabric significantly and improves thermal performance.

For Humid & Monsoon-Exposed Rooms

Upholstery in rooms adjacent to open terraces, balconies, or in buildings with poor ventilation is specified with anti-mould treatment on the backing fabric and moisture-barrier foam in the cushion construction. We do not use natural horsehair or untreated feather fillings in Mumbai upholstery — these can harbour mould and sustain biological activity in humid conditions. Treated down clusters with moisture-barrier ticking are used for cushion fillings where a softer hand is required.

European Fabric Sources

FCI works directly with fabric mills and agents across Italy, Belgium, France, and the UK. Our library includes fabrics from Dedar (Milan), Pierre Frey (Paris), Romo (UK), Zimmer+Rohde (Frankfurt), and Casamance (Paris). These are not catalogues we access on request — our soft furnishings team has standing relationships with these suppliers and can access stock yardage, cutting service, and new collections as they are released. For bespoke colourways or pattern repeats, we can work with mills on minimum-order custom weaves for large projects.

Tonal Coordination

Mumbai’s most successful luxury interiors tend to work within a tight tonal range rather than using strong contrasting colours — partly because Mumbai’s natural light is warmer and more intense than northern European or American light, which is what most international fabric collections are designed for. A fabric that reads as a fresh, cool blue in a London showroom can read as grey-green in direct Mumbai afternoon light. We review all fabric selections under the actual light conditions of the installation space before confirming orders.

Texture & Pattern

Texture plays a more important role in Mumbai luxury interiors than pattern — the city’s strong light creates dramatic shadow play on textured fabrics (bouclé, linen, ribbed weaves) that pattern-only fabrics cannot achieve. Where pattern is specified, we scale it carefully to the room proportions: large-pattern fabrics need large rooms and high ceilings to avoid a visually busy effect. Our design service includes fabric coordination as an integral part of the interior design phase — not a separate exercise.
