Upholstery is the element of furniture making that most clients notice first and most furniture makers get wrong. The fabric choice, the cushion construction, the finishing details at edges and corners — these are what you touch, what photographs, what determines whether a piece reads as genuinely luxurious or merely expensive. A sofa built on an excellent hardwood frame can be entirely undone by mediocre upholstery work.
At FCI India, our upholstery atelier has been operating from our Mumbai manufacturing facilities for over six decades. What follows is an honest account of what bespoke upholstery actually involves — materials, construction, and the decisions that separate a piece that lasts twenty years from one that looks tired after three.
The Fabric Conversation: Where It Really Starts
When clients come to us asking about fabric options, the initial conversation is rarely about aesthetics. Before discussing whether they want linen, silk, velvet or leather, we need to understand how the piece will be used. A formal drawing room sofa that accommodates two people for occasional after-dinner conversation has different requirements from a family room sectional that sees daily use by children and pets. Getting this context wrong means recommending a fabric that won’t perform.
With that context established, the fabric world opens up considerably. Our current library includes:
- Italian performance linens: Manufacturers like Dedar, Rubelli and Sahco produce linens that combine the natural, breathable feel appropriate for Mumbai’s climate with rub counts of 40,000+ that make them genuinely viable for regular use
- Indian handwoven silks: Sourced from Varanasi and Kanchipuram weavers with whom we’ve maintained relationships for decades, these silks bring a textile heritage that no European fabric can replicate — and an exclusivity that means your furniture won’t exist in identical form anywhere else
- Belgian and French velvets: For clients who want drama and tactility in lower-use applications; quality velvet in a formal space is transformative
- Technical fabrics: For sea-facing applications where moisture is a constant concern, we specify solution-dyed fabrics with appropriate backing treatments
Our full materials reference gives a broader picture, but the specific recommendation always depends on the conversation.
Cushion Construction: The Difference You Feel
This is where most budget furniture fails, quietly and gradually. The cushion interior — foam specification, spring construction, feather wrapping — determines how a piece feels on first sit and how it continues to feel after five years. Cheap foam compresses and doesn’t recover. Poor spring construction develops an unpleasant bounce. Incorrectly specified feather-to-foam ratios create cushions that look beautiful in a showroom but require constant plumping in a real home.
Our standard specification for luxury seating combines a high-resilience foam core (typically 40kg/m³ density minimum) wrapped in a layer of Dacron wadding, topped with a feather-down mix on pieces where that aesthetic is appropriate. The seat pad sits over a hand-tied eight-way spring system for sofas — the same construction method used in quality British upholstery for over a century, and still the most reliable approach for longevity.
Clients can examine cross-section samples of our cushion constructions at our Fort showroom during a services consultation — we encourage this, because understanding what you’re buying makes the investment decision much clearer.
The Craft Details That Matter
Bespoke upholstery is distinguished from production upholstery in the details. Pattern matching across multiple cushions. The way a welt cord sits at a corner. The tension distribution on a tufted back. The neatness of a zip placement that will never be seen but reveals whether a craftsman takes pride in invisible work.
Our upholsterers serve a five-year apprenticeship before working unsupervised on client pieces. This isn’t sentiment — it’s the minimum time required to develop the hand skills that distinguish genuinely fine upholstery from competent production work. Mumbai’s luxury furniture market has no shortage of competent production work. The distinction worth paying for is expertise.
Durability in Mumbai’s Climate
Upholstery fabrics in Mumbai face specific challenges. The monsoon season creates high ambient humidity that accelerates wear on improperly backed fabrics. Air conditioning in residential spaces creates rapid humidity cycling. Direct sunlight through west-facing windows will fade most natural fabrics within a season if UV protection isn’t specified.
We address these through fabric specification (appropriate backing treatments, UV-resistant options for exposed positions), finish treatments applied post-upholstery, and honest guidance about which fabrics are appropriate for which positions in a room. A silk that’s perfect for a north-facing formal room may be entirely wrong for the south-facing living room — and telling clients this, even when it redirects them toward a less expensive option, is the only honest way to work.
The Reupholstery Consideration
Quality upholstered furniture is designed to be reupholstered. The frame is the long-lived investment; the fabric is the changeable element. Pieces we made thirty years ago have been through two or three fabric iterations as clients’ tastes evolved, and they sit as well today as when they were built. This lifecycle thinking changes the economics of the initial investment considerably.
