What “Modular” Actually Means
Modular kitchens are built from pre-designed cabinet modules in standard sizes (typically 300mm, 450mm, 600mm widths). These modules are manufactured in a factory, transported to site, and assembled.
What “Custom” Actually Means
A custom kitchen is designed and built specifically for your space. There are no standard modules — every cabinet, drawer, and shelf is manufactured to exact dimensions.
Design Flexibility
Modular: Good flexibility within the system’s constraints. You can choose from various module types and configurations, but you’re always working within standard dimensions, which means some spaces end up as fillers or dead zones.
Custom: Complete flexibility. Unusual kitchen shapes, non-standard ceiling heights, awkward corners — custom handles all of it without compromise. Every millimetre of your kitchen works for you.
Material Quality
Modular: Most use engineered wood (MDF, HDF, or commercial plywood) with laminate, acrylic, or veneer finishes. Quality varies enormously by brand and price point.
Custom: You choose the materials. Marine-grade BWR plywood with solid wood frames and granite countertop? Done. Mix materials? Done. You’re not limited to what a manufacturer stocks.
Cost
Modular: Entry-level starts around ₹1,50,000-₹3,00,000 for a small kitchen. Mid-range runs ₹4,00,000-₹8,00,000. Premium imported brands can reach ₹15,00,000-₹30,00,000.
Custom: Typically starts around ₹3,00,000-₹5,00,000 for a basic layout and can reach ₹10,00,000-₹25,00,000 for a large, fully loaded kitchen with premium materials.
Durability in Mumbai’s Climate
Modular: This is where many modular kitchens struggle in Mumbai. Standard MDF and particleboard absorb moisture during monsoon, causing swelling, warping, and eventually disintegration.
Custom: A competent custom manufacturer specifies materials for Mumbai conditions from the start. BWR plywood, marine-grade options for under-sink cabinets, proper moisture barriers are standard in a well-executed custom kitchen.
Installation Timeline
Modular: Faster. Factory-made modules can be installed in 5-10 days. Total timeline 4-8 weeks from order.
Custom: Slower. Total timeline typically 8-14 weeks.
Long-Term Service and Repairs
Modular: Replacement depends on the manufacturer still producing that module in that finish. Brands discontinue ranges regularly.
Custom: Repairs and replacements are straightforward. A good manufacturer keeps records and can replicate any component years later.

Choose modular if you need a kitchen quickly, you’re on a tight budget, you’re in a rental, or you prefer dealing with a single branded supplier.
Choose custom if you’re investing in a home you’ll live in for years, your kitchen layout is irregular, you want the best material quality for Mumbai’s climate, or you have specific design requirements that standard modules can’t accommodate.
For the luxury segment — where aesthetics, material quality, and longevity all matter — custom is almost always the better investment.
